Field experiments were conducted in 1993, 1994, and 1995 to determine the effects of glufosinate rate and application timing on giant foxtail, common lambsquarters, common cocklebur, and Pennsylvania smartweed control in absence of a crop. Glufosinate at 140 g ai/ha controlled less than 80% of the weed species evaluated. When glufosinate rate was increased to 420 g/ha and applied to 10-cm giant foxtail, control was greater than 80% all 3 yr of the study. Applications made to 10-cm plants resulted in 80% or greater control for common cocklebur all 3 yr and Pennsylvania smartweed 2 of the 3 yr with 420 and 560 g/ha, respectively. Common lambsquarters was the most tolerant species evaluated and was not consistently controlled acceptably (> 80%), even with glufosinate at rates of 560 g/ha. Control with glufosinate at 420 or 560 g/ha was most effective when applied at the 10-cm weed height compared either to the 5- or 15-cm weed height.

Background
Although evidence exists for abnormal brain function across various anxiety disorders, direct comparison of neural function across diagnoses is needed to elicit abnormalities common across disorders and those distinct to a particular diagnosis.
AimsTo delineate common and distinct abnormalities within generalised anxiety (GAD), panic and social anxiety disorder (SAD) during affective processing.
MethodFifty-nine adults (15 with GAD, 15 with panic disorder, 14 with SAD, and 15 healthy controls) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while completing a facial emotion matching task with fearful, angry and happy faces.
ResultsGreater differential right amygdala activation to matching fearful v. happy facial expressions related to greater negative affectivity (i.e. trait anxiety) and was heightened across all anxiety disorder groups compared with controls. Collapsing across emotional face types, participants with panic disorder uniquely displayed greater posterior insula activation.
ConclusionsThese preliminary results highlight a common neural basis for clinical anxiety in these diagnoses and also suggest the presence of disorder-specific dysfunction.

Efficient and reliable particle separators and concentrators are needed to support a wide range of analytical functions including pathogen detection, sample preparation, high-throughput particle sorting, and biomedical diagnostics. The advent of lab-on-a-chip devices based on the phenomenon of dielectrophoresis offers advantages that can meet several of the challenges associated with cell sorting and detection. The majority of the devices presented in the scientific literature have used glass-based devices for these applications, but there has been recent activity that indicates that polymer-based devices can operate as effectively as their glass progenitors. Processing and operational advantages motivate the transition from glass and silicon to polymer microdevices: mechanical robustness, economy of scale, ease of thermoforming and mass manufacturing, and the availability of numerous innate chemical polymer compositions for tailoring performance. We present here a summary of the developments toward, and results obtained from, these polymeric dielectrophoretic devices in the selective trapping, concentration, and gated release of a range of biological organisms and particles.

In November 2002, the first of three outbreaks of Salmonella Montevideo infection in Australia and New Zealand was identified in New South Wales, Australia. Affected persons were interviewed, and epidemiologically linked retail outlets inspected. Imported tahini was rapidly identified as the source of infection. The contaminated tahini was recalled and international alerts posted. A second outbreak was identified in Australia in June–July 2003 and another in New Zealand in August 2003. In a total of 68 S. Montevideo infections, 66 cases were contacted. Fifty-four (82%) reported consumption of sesame seed-based foods. Laboratory analyses demonstrated closely related PFGE patterns in the S. Montevideo isolates from human cases and sesame-based foods imported from two countries. On the basis of our investigations sesame-based products were sampled in other jurisdictions and three products in Canada and one in the United Kingdom were positive for Salmonella spp., demonstrating the value of international alerts when food products have a wide distribution and a long shelf life. A review of the controls for Salmonella spp. during the production of sesame-based products is recommended.

The thermal expansion and viscosity of water and salt solutions in porous silica glasses have been systematically investigated, and the effect of salts on the properties of water in confined geometry has been addressed. A dilatometric method has been devised and utilized to measure the thermal expansion of confined liquids. A beam-bending method that was developed to study the permeability of porous bodies has been used to measure the relative viscosity of salt solutions to water inside the silica pores. This work has demonstrated that water when confined in nanopores shows anomalous behavior and its thermal expansion is higher than bulk water. This work has also suggested that the presence of ions in water could enhance the anomaly of water in confined space and the extent of the ion effect is dependent on the ion charge.

Summary
Introduction
The mechanisms determining three-dimensional dynamics in animal congregations are behavioral, and thus it is appropriate that the approaches covered in this book are focused primarily on individuals. This chapter breaks out of this mold, because we use a population-level, Eulerian approach (see Ch. 7 by Turchin). A focus on populations, rather than individuals, was forced upon us by the characteristics of our empirical system – the congregation of southern pine beetles around mass-attacked host trees. In fact, in our first (unsuccessful) attempts at quantifying beetle movements in the vicinity of attractive foci, we tried to use an individual-based approach. However, we were not able to consistently follow flying beetles. A certain proportion of beetles flew upwards, out of sight. Even when they remained low, beetles were easily lost against the forest background because they are very small (about 3 mm in length), are dark colored, and fly fast, following erratic paths.
In our second approach, we shifted our focus from the behavior of individuals to the dynamics of groups. Because the Eulerian approach does not keep track of individuals, one cannot directly measure parameters of individual behavior. However, by using behavioral observations and making certain assumptions, we can construct a model of population redistribution, which in turn can be used to interpret population-level data, as well as to make inferences about individual behavior. In this chapter we describe an example of how an Eulerian approach can be usefully employed for measuring certain quantitative features of congregating behavior, in particular, the attractive bias exhibited by flying beetles toward the source of congregation pheromones.
